Today I am going to talk about something that we all or perhaps all communities are asking about. I-D-E-N-T-I-T-Y, this 8 letter word is a word that makes the world go around in circles nowadays. But what is identity? is yourself the person you see in the mirror ? is it the food you eat? The clothes you wear? The language you speak? Or what exactly is an identity?
Across time, human beings have been trying to separate themselves community from another and trying to establish different cultures and lives which lead to different historical backgrounds where they try to relate to them and announce that this is their identity , this is who they are.
An example to that, is Egyptians relating themselves to Pharos, Scandinavians to Vikings, British to Saxons and Germany to Germanic tribes… and the list goes on, every nation relates itself to the characteristics of their history and apply them to them. But if we take a much closer look at the history of the human race we will find that they all are the same. They love, hate, eat, drink and feel almost the same about most of the topics even if they differed in the way they implement them.
Identity is defined now by the set of characteristics a nation has acquired across time even if they were acquired via another nation that have invaded them to form who they are. I personally believe nations are people who lived in different places and due to different circumstances and surrounding nature, but if we switch these nations one, in the place of the other, would they act differently and perhaps act like the other nation which they could be criticizing today?
I find that to be very intriguing question, which I personally can not answer alone, I can try but I can not provide a definite answer. However, back to identity, now after the globalization the world is trying to reunite the world into one global identity. Now after thousands of years where humans have fought so hard to separate themselves from one another. They are trying to become one. This statement is far from accurate. Because some nations are trying to eliminate other nations. A long struggle this will be.
I believe the identity is trying to be who we are and seek the best qualities and characteristics and try to define ourselves around them.
Your identity is not your name on your ID card...my belief, your identity lies within your soul.
So if you want to try to find who you are...why not ask yourself?
