Dear Premier Graham,

We applaud the Government of New Brunswick on its initiative to examine the traditional approach to development in New Brunswick (Self-Sufficiency Task Force www.gnb.ca/2026).

While we may have individual concerns and accolades over the mandate of the task force, over the process, or over specific policy prescriptions, we all agree that one crucial issue is overlooked.  We jointly call for full cost accounting of proposed projects.  While business is capable of providing reasonable data on their private costs, we must include the costs society pays for such projects including environmental damage, damage to other sectors such as tourism, human health impacts, and other social and environmental costs. These are very real costs often borne by taxpayers.

We are concerned that the focus of the plan upon an energy hub and a roads-based export economy has not been subjected to full cost accounting.

We cannot predict whether full cost accounting will change the priorities of the proposed action plan, but we believe that proceeding forward without such accounting is ill-advised and may lead to decisions that defeat the ultimate purpose of the self-sufficiency task force.

Sincerely,
