ImageThe Democratic Alliance is demanding urgent and stringent action to resolve the crisis in Pomfret. The area is completely dysfunctional and the citizens who live there are being written off by a biased Government.

The situation in Pomfret has deteriorated to such an extent during the past weeks that the school had to close down today.

The community of more than 5000 residents has been without electricity for more than a week – prior to that, the electricity supply was on and off for an extended period.

The community has now been without water for five consecutive days. The sewage system has become totally dysfunctional. Open electric cables in the streets remain a daily life-threatening hazard whenever the electricity is restored.

In addition the five-year continious threat by the North West Government to remove the Portuguese speaking community from Pomfret to a number of other locations has added to the insecurity of the community. This also resulted in the Department of Public Works (National) to abort maintenance in the community. There is no infrastructure maintenance forthcoming from the North West Government, the Molopo Local Municipality or the Bophirima District Municipality.

The political obsession against the people of Pomfret had its origin in the Namibian / Angolan war and was aggravated by the Equatorial Guinea / Harare incident - as expressed by the former North West MEC for Local Government and Housing, Penye Vilakazi, who said that the people of Pomfret were a problem in the past, remain a problem now and will continue to be a problem in future, which is a clear indication of the victimization of former 32 Bn members and their families.

These people are South African citizens with all the basic rights of SA citizens. The current NW Government strategy to smother them out of Pomfret is inhuman and makes a mockery of the human rights as entrenched in the SA Constitution.

The DA will once again call on the North West Premier to address the growing problem with extreme urgency and will also report the statutory intimidation and victimization of the Pomfret community to the Human Rights Commission.
